Program description

Cartagena de Indias, founded in 1533, was one of the three main ports of the Spanish empire in the New World. From Cartegena, fascinating and historically wealthy port, sailed the biggest galleons of the Spanish fleet exporting gold and importing slaves. Thank to this, the city became an attractive spot for European pirates to plunder. To defend the city against pirate attacks, different fortifications were built around the urban agglomeration. These stone guards made Cartagena de Indias the South American city characterized by the strongest defenses of its time.

Cartagena gives you the opportunity to travel back in time admiring the architectures from the Spanish Colonial era. The baroque style still embellishes the streets, houses and balconies of this city. For this reason, it was included in UNESCO’s world and cultural heritage list in 1984. Cartagena de Indias has the most privileged location in the Americas, overlooking the Caribbean Sea in a quiet and beautiful bay.
