Program description
The Ciénaga Grande (or Large Marsh) Flora and Fauna Sanctuary is located between Santa Marta and Barranquilla. It is the largest lagoon-delta complex in Colombia and considered one of the most imperative bodies of water to the ecosystem in the area, sustaining the lives of many animal species. UNESCO declared the site a Reserve of Man and the biosphere in 2000, and a RAMSAR site of global importance in 1998.
Visitors of this wildlife sanctuary will journey by boat across marshes connected by natural canal systems and mazes of mangrove trees with an exotic and wonderful beauty you won’t find anywhere else. The tour also visits “Nueva Venecia”, “Buenavista”, and Trojas de Cataca, three amazing townships of up to 300 colorful houses built on tree trunks that appear to float in the middle of the marsh. Undoubtedly, the fascination in these stilt villages is the simplicity in the lifestyle that has supported its people for over 100 years. The villages genuinely illustrate the lives of the people living from artisan fishing.
The imposing Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the Caribbean Sea, and the Rio Magdalena also complement this spectacular scenery making it one of the most magical places in Colombia

Program
On this tour you will go first to the village Tasajeras” (1 hr. from Barranquilla away). Here we will take a typical fishing boat to start the trip until reaching the colorful stilt villages Nueva Venecia” and Buena Vista”, each with approximately 300 houses in the middle of a Large Swamp (Cienaga Grande).
