History of the Taironaka Reserve
River tubbing tour
Boat Trip through the Don Diego River
Panoramic view of the Sierra Nevada
The Taironaka reserve is an archeological paradise, where the remains of a more than a thousand-year-old Tayrona settlement were found. Here the unique opportunity presents itself to see handicrafts and accessories of an ancient civilization. Items such as urns, flutes, axes, ceremonial dishes, and arrows are displayed in a small Museum at the reserve. The site is located approximately 60 km from the city of Santa Marta on the banks of the Don Diego River. It is there our tour begins with an unforgettable boat trip through the mouth of the Caribbean Sea.
This natural reserve contains an abundance of trees, tropical flowers, wildlife, and along with a mild climate this natural reserve is an idyllic place perfect for unwinding. From the park one is able to admire the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada as well, making for a diverse visual experience every time. Apart from the beautiful landscapes, visitors may see a hut built by the indigenous people who still gather there today, to pray and socialize with other Indians of the region.

From Santa Marta we will go through the interesting coastal road until we reach the Don Diego’s riverbanks (90 Mins). From there the journey will be continued on a boat going upstream ‘til we get to the reserve. As a welcome we are received with some typical patacones and agua de panela”. Later we visit the small Tayrona Museum to get to know a little more about their history and the way of living of this culture from the past to these recent days. We will visit a typical Kogui home called Bohío and then we continue going around the prehispanic terraces until we get to a small viewpoint (around 1,5 hours). The rest of the time is free. We suggest either a relaxing bath in Don Diego River, or any of the optional activities related to this tour.
Our program includes an ECOLOGICAL WALK TO DON DIEGUITO RIVER AND TRIP ON FLOATS: We walk through a trail full of exhuberant vegetation and Don Diego River to reach the mouth of Don Dieguito River into the Don Diego River.
