Program description

Between Barranquilla and Cartagena de Indias lies the Totumo Mud Volcano, a natural exotic wonder. The mud volcano is about 20 meters high, and has a continuous warm dense mud permanently flowing from its crater, which is accessible through a long wooden staircase. When reaching the highest point, you can enjoy the healing properties of this mud, which is said to have “miraculous effects” on ones health. The indigenous people believe the mud has restorative properties, and the chemical components of the mud contain healing minerals such as; mineralized salts, iodine, and potassium. These chemicals are believed to facilitate poor blood circulation, draw impurities from the skin, and have been linked to curing rheumatism. Furthermore, the mud allows the body to relax while floating inside the volcano, helping release anxiety and stress for some.

The volcano is also surrounded by a number of smaller pools of mud that contain the same mineral properties. The Totumo Mud Volcano along with the pools have become among one of the most favored and famous features of the Northern Colombian region. On the way to the volcano we will visit first the Castle of San Antonio de Salgar, the town of Puerto Colombia and the beaches of Puerto Velero, undoubtedly the most beautiful corners of the region.
